Coronavirus outbreak: The parallels between COVID-19 and the Spanish Flu pandemics Unlisted
Author and historian Skip Desjardin explores the parallels and the differences between the current COVID-19 pandemic and the deadly 1918 influenza pandemic, known as the "Spanish Flu" which saw the first case in the state of Kansas and killed 100,000 people worldwide.
Desjardin says the math of pandemics is often "scarier" than the science. The parallels show that social isolation and early diagnosis were effective measures of slowing down the spread of the virus.
Not only have medical advancements changed dramatically, but how government officials deal with pandemics have as well: implementing health protocols, being honest about what's going on as soon as possible and how to take care of yourself, Desjardin says. This was not the case 100 years ago at the height of the First World War.
