Classic Cocktail with Pandemic Roots | How to Drink Unlisted

Did you know that the Caipirinha has its roots in two historic pandemics? Get on in here and take a trip through history in a glass!

I've done the Caipirinha previously on the show and I did it fairly quick without much historic context, so I felt like it needed a revisit. In my research I found out a bit more about the supposed "Honey & Garlic" version of the recipe and based on that, today I'm presenting the Caipirinha three ways. Two that I think are accurate to the 1918 Spanish Flu version of the drink that was popular as a "cure" in Brazil, and finally, just to clean out my mouth really, a Caipirinha the way I currently enjoy them. And I do enjoy them. You're going to need to make a Honey-Garlic syrup to follow along.

Honey-Garlic Syrup
To a pot add
2 parts honey
1 part water
a lot of smashed garlic
Heat to a simmer
then blend with immersion blender
simmer for 5 minutes or so
Let it cool
Strain/Filter

1918 Hot Caipirinha
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Lime Juice
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Honey-Garlic Syrup
1.5 oz. -or- 45 ml. Cachaça
3 oz. -or- 90 ml. Hot Water
Build in the Glass
Pour down the drain.

1918 Cold Caipirinha
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Lime Juice
1 oz. -or- 30 ml. Honey-Garlic Syrup
1.5 oz. -or- 45 ml. Cachaça
Stir over crack ice

Today's Caipirinha
Half a lime, cut into quarters, pith removed
2 oz. -or- 60 ml. Cachaça
Sugar to taste
Muddle
Add ice
Stir
