“History doesn’t repeat itself, but it often rhymes.” This quote, credited to Mark Twain, is a good TD;LR for The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy by William Strauss and Neil Howe. In this seminal book, they theorize that American history can be subdivided into four recurring generational periods, which culminate in a crisis at the end of 80-90 year cycles.

It is argued that we’re in the middle of a fourth turning crisis, an era of destruction when institutions are dismantled and rebuilt. In the year since I first spoke to Brandon Quittem about The Fourth Turning, economic and geopolitical events have further fuelled this belief.

US global hegemony is waning, concern is growing that factional tensions in the US could escalate, there is increasing grass-root tension across the world countries over state-mandated pandemic controls. In the meantime, as economic indicators flash red, trust in politicians and central bankers is rapidly eroding.

So are we witnessing the evolution of the fourth turning amidst the rise of Bitcoin?

Twenty years ago, El Salvador became a dollarised nation, bringing economic stability to the country and improving the country's potential for investment. However, it did so at the cost of giving up its monetary policy to the US Federal bank.

Two decades later, following the COVID-19, the global economic outlook has changed significantly. As a result, the Fed has taken extreme measures to combat the economic impact of the pandemic and is printing money at previously unseen levels.

The stimulus packages that help American's do not make their way to dollarised El Salvador, but the people of Salvadorans do suffer the adverse effects of the US debasing the dollar.

Two years ago, Nayib Bukele won a landslide presidential election in El Salvador, becoming the first President since the Salvadoran Civil War who did not represent either of the two major parties.

As the founder of the political party Nuevas Ideas, President Bukele lived up to his reputation when on the 8th of June 2021, El Salvador enacted its Bitcoin Law, making it the first country to adopt bitcoin as a legal tender. The decision has been met with excitement and scepticism.

Could this bold move be a catalyst for prosperity in El Salvador? And will other nations follow suit, potentially helping billions?

Bitcoin has won over some of America's best-known billionaires, and institutions worldwide are treating it as a serious financial asset. But bitcoin's rising price is only one part of the story.

Whether they know it or not, people who buy bitcoin are strengthening a tool for protecting human rights. This still relatively new form of electronic money is censorship-resistant, seizure-resistant, borderless, permissionless, pseudonymous, programmable, and peer-to-peer.

In bitcoin, transactions don't go through banks or financial intermediaries. They travel directly from one person to another.

Payment processing is done not by a regulated company such as Visa or Mastercard but by a decentralized global software network. Storage is handled not by a bank but by the users themselves.

Bitcoin issuance isn't determined by central bankers. The currency's creator, Satoshi Nakamoto, set it to have an ultimate limit of 21 million. No one can ever print more.

Bitcoin transactions can't be stopped, and you don't need to reveal your name or address or telephone number to participate. You just need internet access.

In 2017, the economist Paul Krugman described bitcoin as "some fancy technological thing that nobody really understands. There's been no demonstration yet that it actually is helpful in conducting economic transactions. There's no anchor for its value."

Krugman lives in a sheltered environment in a liberal democracy with constitutional protections. His native currency is globally dominant and relatively stable. It's easy for him to open a bank account, to use a mobile app to pay bills, or to grow his wealth by investing in real estate or stocks.

But not everyone has that level of privilege. Around 4.2 billion people live under authoritarian regimes that use money as a tool for surveillance and state control. Their currency is often debased, and they are, for the most part, cut off from the international system that Krugman enjoys. For them, saving and transacting outside the government's purview isn't shady business. It's a way to preserve their freedoms.

Snowden on Bitcoin

Recently Snowden was awarded the Thomas Szasz Award from the Center for Independent Thought, which was presented to him by my boss John Stossel. During the call I was able to ask Snowden about Bitcoin and the need for anonymous digital payments.

Bitcoin played an important role in the 2013 Snowden leaks: the servers that Snowden used to transfer information to journalists were paid for using bitcoin, because he didn’t want those records connected to his name.

Snowden explained to me that Bitcoin is superior to credit cards, because it's at least pseudonymous. But steps need to be taken to add privacy.

He once tweeted: "Bitcoin is great, but "if it's not private, it's not safe,"” and he said that Zcash's privacy tech makes it the most interesting Bitcoin alternative.

I asked him about all of this when we spoke.

European Central Bank President: "Stablecoins threaten monetary sovereignty.”

Between the STABLE Act, which would ensure that only banks could issue stablecoins and would make all others illegal, Treasury Secretary Mnuchin’s plan to go after crypto, and the French Finance Minister trying to fight anonymous crypto transactions, things are getting heated up.

We’ll get to see if bitcoin and other decentralized innovation can hold their own in an arms race against the most powerful entities in the world.

Today, ConsenSys, a large blockchain software technology company focused on the Ethereum network, announced a partnership with Protocol Labs (the creator of Filecoin) and an integration with Filecoin.

You can think of Filecoin like a decentralized Airbnb for data storage. They launched on their mainnet last week, and it was one of the most anticipated launches from the 2017 ICO era.

The aim of the ConsenSys/Protocol Labs collaboration is to develop the decentralized storage ecosystem and community, integrating with Ethereum at every layer of the decentralized technology stack.

Joseph Lubin, Founder and CEO of ConsenSys, and Juan Benet, Founder and CEO of Protocol Labs, joined me on a panel with me to talk about the partnership.

Benet describes how Filecoin’s open network will foster a more sustainable and globally accessible web infrastructure. The IPFS system he built promises both faster and cheaper retrieval of data, eliminating the need to rely on centralized servers. Filecoin now provides an economic incentive for that system.

Lubin explains how the ConsenSys Product Suit hopes to provide the best view of the Filecoin storage marketplace, and make price discovery for storage on the Filecoin network simple and transparent.

He also discussed the Filecoin DeFi Bridge that will enable conversion of the Filecoin (FIL) cryptocurrency to ERC-20 tokenized FIL. Once on Ethereum, FIL holders and miners can deposit their tokenized FIL as collateral in a DeFi lending market to earn interest, or borrow more FIL to stake on storage mining operations.
Many Ethereum and ConsenSys apps have used IPFS for years, because decentralized storage is a critical part of the Web 3.0 architecture. This partnership is an exciting step forward for a decentralized internet.
